The West Quoddy Head Light Keepers Association will celebrate the bicentennial of Maine’s fourth oldest light with a week of activities and events at the lighthouse on the grounds of Quoddy Head State Park. Anniversary festivities begin on July 19 with recognition of former light keepers, tower tours led by the U.S. Coast Guard, and a murder mystery hunt on the state park grounds. Over the next five days there will be a 5K road race, nature walks, a children’s bowling tournament, educational beach walk, concert, craft projects and storytelling at Lubec Memorial Library, an art auction at the Grange Hall and a lighthouse dance at the American Legion hall. July 26 will be family day at the lighthouse with live music, a chicken barbecue, and tower tours. Visitors can explore the state park’s five walking trails through conifer forest, over bog boardwalks, and atop 50-foot ocean cliffs. The present 49-foot tall round brick light tower was built in 1858 and outfitted with a 3rd order Fresnel lens. A new keeper’s house was constructed the same year, and it is now a visitor’s center and museum. The Midsommar Celebration begins with the collecting of wild flowers and foliage for the majstång (maypole). On Friday there will be a public supper at the Stockholm Legion Hall followed by a Swedish dance with music by The Swedish Meatballs. Saturday will begin with a frukost (breakfast) at Thomas Park. Decorating and trimming of the maypole starts at 11 a.m. at the replica of New Sweden's 1870 Capitolium (capitol building.) Tours and demonstrations will take place nearby at the Noak Blacksmith Shop, a restored 1870s forge; and at the Larsson-Ostlund House, the only remaining two-story log home built during the same period. The New Sweden Little Folk Dancers will dance around the raised maypole, and the vocal group Stämbandet will keep people moving. Tours of an 1896 colony home and 1895 one room schoolhouse will begin at noon in the town of Woodland, while the Capitolium offers Swedish dance lessons for all ages.
