Snow tubing is not just for kids in Maine; try it for a great thrill

Snow tubing continues to grow in popularity because it is fun, requires little athletic prowess, and can be done by people of almost all ages (although most snow tubing facilities have a minimum age or a minimum height for tubers). Snow tubing is offered as an add-on at some downhill ski areas and at tubing centers, all of which normally have tubes for rent. Many have lifts, to ease the uphill work and prolong the fun. It is always smart to phone ahead when planning a snow tubing trip to learn about snow conditions, liability requirements (some require parents' signatures for tubers under age 18), and other details.

Black Mountain recommends that you call ahead to make sure tubing is open. Hours: Friday, 4-9 p.m.; Saturday, noon to 9 p.m.; Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. Fee: $15.

Six hundred foot tubing chute is served by a lift. Tubing is allowed for everyone over the age of 3. Tubing is for anyone over the age of 3 years. Runs are designed for adults and children. 12 lanes of snow tubing served by an express lift. Sledding also is offered. Night tubing and sledding. Park does snowmaking. Must be at least 3 feet tall to do snow tubing, Single riders must be at least 4 feet tall. Children between 3 and 4 feet tall must ride in a double tube with an adult. Snow tubing tickets are sold for set time blocks. See park’s calendar page for operating times and time blocks. Single tubes are $18 per session; doubles are $27 per session. You may order tickets online; reservations are not taken by phone. Goodies Café sells food, soft ice cream, hot and cold drinks.

Snow tubing at this downhill mountain offered 3 evenings/week for kids age 12 and younger

Sugarloaf offers tubing for kids age 12 and younger on the Birches on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday nights. Sessions are 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 per session, available at The Outpost on Main Street. Tickets go on sale 30 minutes before start of session. No pre-sales or reservations for tubing. Tubing availability is limited and can sell out. Tubing is always weather dependent. Check on hours and snow conditions by called the Outpost at 207-237-6875.

Snow tubing offered at large downhill ski area on Fridays, Saturdays, and holidays

The snow tubing park at Sunday River is located on Sundance Trail in South Ridge. Access to this trail is by the Sundance surface lift. Tickets are sold at the Welcome Center at South Ridge Lodge. A limited number of tickets is available. Tube riders must be at least 5 years old or 36 inches tall. Everyone is encouraged to wear a helmet for tubing. Fee: $10 per hour. Hours: Friday, Saturday, and holidays, 4-9 p.m. Tubing is weather-dependent and schedule may vary. Call 207-824-5234 for weekly updates.

Days and Hours: Friday, 6-9 p.m.; Saturday, noon-9 p.m.; Sunday, noon-6 p.m. Session times are noon-3 p.m.; 3-6 p.m.; and 6-9 p.m. Fee: $13 per 3-hour session (includes rental for the snow tube). A 10 ticket pack is $110, and its must be purchased in advance. Number of tickets sold for each session is limited and sessions sell out. Snowtubers are encouraged to buy tickets in advance. Snowtubers younger than 18 years old must present a signature of parent or legal guardian.
