South Coast welcomes families, kids and dogs for fun at the beach and water parks

The South Coast of Maine feels like it was made for family vacations. Kids and adults will both feel a thrill as they pass through the gateway to Maine and into the land of lobsters and lighthouses and parks. Kids need to spend at day at parks like Funtown Splashtown USA and Monkey Trucks. For a day of quieter fun, there are miles of trails through coastal woods and wetlands in the Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge. The beaches, of course, and wide, sandy, and gorgeous. Old Orchard Beach is known for special events like sand sculpting and car shows and fireworks the kind of neon-laced night frolics that kids and teenagers love. Plenty to choose from when you are looking for family friendly lodgings. And, many lodgings welcome your dog, too.

You can also ride a Ferris wheel, carousel or bumper boat, scream in a haunted house, play a round on the mini-golf course, get your swing down in a batting cage and sharpen your arcade-game skills. So much to see and even more to do for families at this Maine resort

When Yankee Magazine said the Nonantum Resort was one of the best family resorts in New England, they knew what they were talking about. For more than 130 years, families have been returning to this waterfront resort, not only for its location (a short walk to the beach or to town) but for its full slate of family and kid-centric activities, from campfires with s’mores and sing-alongs to pop-up events featuring water slides and bounce houses (and ask about the princess and pirate night where the kids seek buried treasure!). Water activities include kayaking, paddleboarding, lobster tours, crabbing and sailing; or go biking or hiking or just enjoy the pool. Boat and trolley tours leave right from the resort.

There’s more than a breeze in the trees on the south coast of Maine. Get the family into Zip trekking a hybrid of a Zip line Tour and an Aerial Trekking course. Self navigate on a variety of Zip lines and rope-course challenges. After a brief ground school, you’re attached to the course by belays but you’ll be able to find your own way. Try your luck with 48 challenges from swinging beams and tightropes, to rolling logs, hanging tires, and cargo nets. There are 3 zip lines, a dual zip, a 35-foot high giant swing, and a rock climbing wall. Kids will enjoy platforms no more than 6’ off the ground and enough challenges to provide the kick.

For family fun, together and one by one

Whether you’re going to do family things all together or the independent little rascals always want to ride and romp by themselves, Funtown Splashtown USA presents plenty of opportunities. There's not one but two roller coasters to zoom around on - the classic wooden Excalibur or modern steel-frame Wild Mouse. The youngsters can enjoy such attractions as the Merry-Go-Round, the Classic Carousel and the Balloon Race, a mini-Ferris Wheel. With parents in the back and kids in the front, the Barney Oldfield Roadsters take you around a track. When it comes to fun on wheels, the action level is up to you - it can be as mild as Bumper Cars or Boats, or as adventuresome as the gas-powered Grand Prix Racers.
